About This Video

In this lesson I’m showing you how to play “Lost Without U” by Robin Thicke (one of my personal favorites) on guitar, R&B style. The good news: it’s in the key of C major and there are only six chord shapes you need, so you can realistically learn it in one sitting. I walk you through the exact shapes—Dm7 (5th fret), G7 (3rd), Cmaj7 (3rd), Fmaj7 (3rd), a movable D minor triad shape (starting at 3rd), and Am7 (5th)—then we put them into the main loop that carries most of the song. After the chord loop, I break down the turnaround riff using that D minor triad shape moving up chromatically from fret 3 to 5 (Dm triad → D# minor triad → Em triad). Then I show you the strum/picking approach: it’s simple rhythmically, but it relies on tight muting by relaxing your fretting-hand grip so the chords come out short and smooth. Finally, I cover the quick bridge (Fmaj7 → Dm7 → Am7) and I add an extra “from the future” section where I teach the little melodic line that leads out of the bridge using notes from the A natural minor scale around frets 5–8. By the end, you’ll have everything you need to play along with the recording and keep it sounding clean and R&B.
