About This Video

In this week’s lesson I’m showing you how to play the main riff from “Drive” by SZA. We start with a B over C# shape up around fret 4, and I’ll show you exactly how I finger it by barring from the A string down with my index finger. The big thing here is trying not to hit the high E string—if it rings out it’s not the end of the world, but I’m aiming for a clean, tight sound. From there I walk you through the little chord movement that feels like a C# minor 7 idea (you can also think of it as an E major triad), focusing mainly on the D, G, and B strings. After that, we get into the details that make the riff feel right: the pull-off from fret 7 to fret 4 on the B string (I use my pinky), and I explain how pulling down slightly helps the note speak. Then we go back to the B over C# and hammer on into a more traditional C# minor chord shape using ring, pinky, and middle finger. To wrap it up, I land on a Bmaj7 at fret 2 and add a quick hammer-on with my pinky for a smooth, R&B-style finish—plus a little tremolo arm wiggle if you’ve got it for extra vibe.
