About This Video

In this lesson I break down “Are You Even Real” by Teddy Swims (Giveon vibe all over it) with a super R&B approach: clean chord shapes, smooth transitions, and the right feel in 6/8 time. Before we even touch the progression, I show you the little double-stop riff that loops throughout the song. I’m using index on the G string and middle on the B string, sliding the shape up a whole step, then barring on the 11th fret—simple, but it instantly gives you that signature movement you can loop and play chords over. From there I walk you through the full chord progression, including my preferred “thumb over” Hendrix-y F major and G# minor 7 voicings (but I also mention the standard barre options if that’s what you play). A big part of this song is the articulation: some chords are short and staccato (quick strum, then relax the grip to mute), and others ring out for a full bar. I also slow down the fast chord run (C#, D dim7, D# minor7, F#/E, etc.) and show an easier way to move through it by keeping the barre down. Finally, I map out the chorus loop and the little twist where we swap to a “vanilla” B minor the second time around.
