About This Video

In this video I break down the exact 4-step method I use every single time I need to learn a song on guitar—whether it’s for this channel or for one of my private students. The whole goal is to save you time, headache, and frustration by keeping the process simple: memorization, transitions, combination, and time accountability. If you’re newer to guitar, this is especially important because a lot of the struggle comes from trying to learn the song before you’re actually comfortable with the “tools” (chord shapes, scales, finger strength, coordination) that the song requires. First, I focus on memorizing the shapes—like getting your minor 7 barre chord shape comfortable before you even attempt the progression. Then I isolate transitions by practicing chord pairs back and forth at an even pace, making sure there’s no buzzing, muted strings, or accidental strings ringing. After that, I combine everything into the flow of the song, and only then do I add time accountability with a metronome or a realistic R&B drum/backing track. I also talk about why I keep practice short (15–30 minutes max) and super focused, and how this method helped me retain songs longer instead of forgetting them a week later. At the end, I share a channel update about pausing YouTube livestreams and moving live content to Patreon, plus how to get my R&B Chord Library for free (limited spots).
