About This Video

In this video I break down how I like to use a tremolo (vibrato) bridge specifically for R&B guitar, and I keep it super simple with what I call the “three S’s”: smooth, subtle, and sometimes. The big idea is that the vibrato shouldn’t stick out or feel janky—it needs to fit inside the groove you’re already playing. As a rule of thumb, I usually aim my tremolo movement at either eighth notes in a 4/4 rhythm or a triplet feel when the groove is more like 6/8, just so the modulation matches the song’s pulse. The second guideline is subtlety. For R&B, I’m not trying to do crazy dive bombs or yank the chord way out of tune. I’m barely wiggling the bar—just enough to gently pull the chord slightly out of pitch and back, kind of like how a singer uses vibrato. The last guideline is “sometimes”: you don’t need tremolo on every chord. I like to use it most when a chord is plain and ringing out, and I’ll often skip it when I’m doing embellishments, then bring it back when I’m holding another chord to add that sweet, smooth movement without overdoing it.
