About This Video

In this lesson I break down how to play “Get Close” by Ari Lennox on guitar, and the best part is it’s only four chords. The song is in the key of A♭ major (for those who care), and as long as you’re comfortable with bar chords you’ll be good to go. I show you the exact shapes I’m using: C minor 7, D♭ major 7, B♭ minor 7 (with a few different fingering options), and a super simple D♭6/E♭ voicing. After we lock in the chord shapes, I walk you through the sequence and the timing—because this song is more about groove than “a million chord shapes.” The first half repeats Cmin7 to D♭maj7, then shifts quickly to B♭min7; the second half keeps the same timing but swaps that B♭min7 for D♭6/E♭. I also show a little extra sauce you can add by hammering on a whole-step “9th” on the high E string during those third-chord moments. If you want tabs, I’ve got them on my Patreon. And if this style is a little above your head right now, I also teach Zoom lessons and can help you build the foundation to play R&B smooth and behind the beat.
