About This Video

In this lesson I’m showing you an easy way to play “Video” by India.Arie. It’s a super approachable R&B guitar part (the song came out in 2001 and it’s genuinely one of those progressions you can get under your fingers fast). We’re in the key of G major, and you only need three chord shapes to play along: Em7, Bm7, and Am7. I walk you through each voicing, then we put them into the main progression: Em7 → Bm7 → Am7, then we reverse it: Am7 → Bm7 → Em7. After the chords, I break down the picking pattern that gives it that smooth R&B feel. The idea is simple: separate the root note from the rest of the chord, and when I say “rest of the chord,” I’m mainly talking about the D, G, and B strings (the high E isn’t super important here). For the first Am7 and the last Em7, we hit those DGB strings twice. I also show you how I mute at the end of each chord so the notes ring short and clean. Last thing: if you want “easy mode,” I show an alternate Em7 shape up at the 12th fret so you can get through the song with one main shape if the 7th-fret Em7 is giving you trouble—though the 7th-fret version is still my preference.
