About This Video

In this lesson I break down an easy R&B guitar approach to playing “Honesty” by Pink Sweat$ in the key of A major. I show you the exact chord shapes you need (six total) and I throw them up on the screen so you can pause and get comfortable before we move on. The core loop is Bm7 to E9 to C#m7 to F#7, but to match what I’m hearing in the recording, I use two different voicings for both the C#m7 and the F#7. After we lock in the chord order for the full song, I walk you through the picking pattern that gives it that smooth R&B feel: root note by itself, then the next lowest note, then the top two notes together. Most of the time that’s “low string, D string, then the two highest strings,” but I explain where it shifts depending on the voicing. I also talk about why I choose the higher voicings in the second half—efficiency—so you’re not jumping all over the neck. Finally, I show you the muting that makes it sound like the record. You want those last two notes to be short and staccato, so I either palm mute or (my preference here) relax my fretting-hand grip without leaving the strings. Loop those two halves together and you’ve basically got the whole song.
