About This Video

In this lesson I break down how to play “For Anyone” by H.E.R. on guitar, even though (ironically) there’s no guitar in the original track. I picked it because I love the vibe, and it’s a perfect exercise in learning how to follow chord changes and create a tasteful guitar part that still fits the song. I start with a super simple 4-chord loop that covers most of the tune: Bm7, D7, Gmaj7, and Gm7. That G major to G minor move is one of my favorite little pieces of “ear candy,” because the root stays the same but the color changes in a really musical way. After that, I show you how to get closer to what the recording is doing on the Rhodes-style piano. I talk about using tremolo to mimic that Rhodes tremolo feel, and I explain a common R&B concept: substituting and re-voicing chords. Instead of the straight D7 shape, I use a C6/9 voicing that works as an inversion/sub for that D7/D9 sound. I also show the little slide embellishment and the quick C7 “sneak-in” turnaround that leads you right back to the top of the progression. The big takeaway: learn to steal vocabulary from other instruments—your playing gets smoother and your chord choices get way more interesting.
