About This Video

In this lesson I break down an easy acoustic R&B guitar tutorial for “Someday” by Elmiene. We’re in the key of G major, and the whole vibe comes from just five chords using only three main shapes: Em7, Bm7/Am7 (same shape moved), and a diminished 7 shape that slides. If you know your barre chords, this is going to be a breeze—but if barre chords have been turning you off, I still want you to try this. Let this be your introduction to playing more barre chords this year, because I promise it’s not as bad as it feels at first. I show you exactly how I finger each chord, which strings I’m actually targeting (a lot of inside strings), and how I like to play the Bm7 with my thumb over the low E for easier muting—especially if I’m playing with a pick and I want to be a little “sloppy” in a controlled way. We add a quick hammer-on embellishment on the Em7, then move through the progression with arpeggios, clean mutes (right-hand slap or relaxing the fretting hand), and that quick diminished slide up three frets. To keep the progression from getting boring, I also give you extra R&B flavor options: sliding into chords from a half step, adding chromatic movement (Bm7 → B♭m7 → Am7), and simple melodic embellishments you can sprinkle on top. Once you’ve got the two halves of the progression, you’ve basically got the whole song.
