In this part of my dream horse barn build, I’m finally getting something installed that makes the barn feel like… an actual horse barn. I’m putting in full-sized stall gates from American Stalls for the walkouts under the covered lean-tos (what I keep calling my “paddock doors”). This was honestly an unplanned addition—I knew I wasn’t doing Dutch doors, but I still wanted that open concept and, most importantly, full airflow. These gates are grate-style, super heavy duty, match my black powder coat theme, and I love the European yoke detail so the horses can still stick their heads out when the gates are closed. I walk you through the install, including the little workaround we had to do because we’re mounting into a metal building trim that isn’t structural. We used 1-inch aluminum square tubing as a spacer and self-tapping metal screws (since the included hardware is more geared toward wood installs). The openings were 48 inches, and they fit perfectly trim-to-trim—love when that happens. After the gates are up, we shift into “horses are coming ASAP” mode: trenching for power and water. We rented a trencher, hired my old neighbor (an electrician) to run conduit, and used the same trench to bring water in above the electrical line. We also planned ahead by running water lines toward future cross-fencing, the chicken coop, and my garden area. Next up: framing the tack room and utility room so the barn systems can really start coming together.
