In this video, I’m finally getting our chicken coop actually ready for chickens—and then bringing our flock to the new farm. We turned a garden shed into a massive coop a while back, but it wasn’t set up with bedding, feeders, water, or any of the little functional things that make it work day-to-day. I also moved the coop to a spot that makes way more sense: closer to the barn, the horses, and the pig pen area, because I’d rather have the chickens “in the mix” out here than tucked behind the house. I unbox everything I grabbed (yes, I did a lot of Amazon shopping), get the nesting boxes lined, hang up hooks for my egg basket and my sifting poop scooper, and lay down my favorite bedding—coffee grounds—because it seriously smells like a coffee shop and keeps odors down. We add door sweeps to help keep bedding in, set up a metal trash can for feed, and install solar lighting inside and out since we don’t have electric out here. Then we bring home the four chickens I have left (three hens and my rooster) and get them settled in. It’s a smaller flock than I planned, but it feels so good to check another animal off the list—next up is goats and cats.
