In this video I’m on the stand with Jon from Knight’s Custom Campervans, and we get into why most camper layouts are wrong for YOU. Walking around a show you’ll see loads of really nice vans, but so many are just set packages—great on paper, but they can turn into “driveway ornaments” if they don’t match your actual use purpose. And that use purpose is everything: what you carry, how you sleep, whether you cook inside or outside, and who you’re travelling with. We talk through the difference between package builds and going fully bespoke—where you tell them what you want and they build it. That could be bed width choices (112/118/120/126 and more), side kitchens vs galley kitchens, U-shape lounges, front or rear elevating roofs, and anything from a normal battery setup to full Victron/Clayton systems. I also touch on why build standards matter: Jon builds to NCC standard, and I point out details like the pop-top vent and habitation-mode requirements—boring to some people, but absolutely critical. Finally, we chat platforms (T6.1/T7/Transit Custom, MAN TGE, Crafter, Sprinter) and real custom examples—from a Crafter designed to carry a paramotor, to a narrowboat owner wanting a serious 48V, big-solar off-grid setup. The takeaway is simple: do your research, be honest about how you’ll use the van, and build around that—not around what looks good under show lights.
