In this video I take a factory-standard Kia PV5 Passenger EV and try to prove (or disprove) a big question: can a normal passenger EV replace a £60,000+ permanent camper conversion if you go modular? I fit a Slidepod and a Skypod roof tent to turn it into a fully off-grid, 4-berth setup in minutes, then head out for a few days around Devon to properly live with it—sleeping downstairs first, then up in the roof tent, and using it as a daily driver as well. I’m honest about the little things that matter in real-world vanlife: no rear lights, no tailgate lights, and no blinds/curtains so the morning light just pours in (I ended up bodging it with shades). I also push the PV5’s V2L hard—cooking steak and chips and learning the hard way that you can’t just run everything at once. I overloaded it by combining an 1,800W induction hob with a 2,000W grill, tripped the system, and overcooked my fillet… brilliant learning moment. Along the way I stop at Strawberry Fields (renewable-powered and a cracking farm shop), visit Clovelly for a bit of “then vs now” transport perspective, and base up near Croyde where the roof tent gets tested in proper wind. The takeaway: the PV5 is genuinely nice to drive with superb visibility, but modular EV camping is all about managing power, heat, and the practical details.
