About This Video

This wasn’t meant to be my first video from the NEC Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show 2026, but I felt I had to put this out immediately because some seriously misleading information is being passed around the halls. A subscriber came to me worried they’d been told that any campervan conversion with a cut B-pillar area is automatically unsafe. That’s not strictly true, and it’s already putting people off perfectly legitimate converters at the show. In the video I break down the actual manufacturer guidance and the bit people are cherry-picking. Yes, there are warnings about cutting certain roof structures, but the guidance also says that if a cut is absolutely necessary, the structure must be replaced with something that provides equivalent structural integrity and functionality. I explain why the seat belt anchorage area matters (including the 300mm rule), and how type approved converters can (and do) prove compliance through witnessed testing like the wreck 14 pull test, with bodies like VCA and TUV involved. The takeaway is simple: don’t buy into second-hand show gossip. Speak directly to the converter, ask what testing they’ve done, and ask to see the documentation—because many pop-top systems (like Reimo, SCA and Otopop) have been through the relevant testing when fitted as part of an approved process.
