In this one I’m sat in Shane’s absolutely mega-spec VW Transporter (genuinely more tech than most of us need) with Shane and Neil from Nemo’s Camper Adventures, and we get into the real question: does spending £100k+ actually make van life “better”, or can a £1,000 van still deliver the goods? My own Transporter is currently out of action (no fourth gear… and then it got worse), so it’s a proper chat-and-compare rather than me doing a full tour. We talk Glencoe at Christmas, surviving serious cold (down to about -9°C outside while it’s roasting inside with the heater on), insulation, soundproofing, and why different builds suit different people. Shane’s gone modular so it can all bolt to factory tie-down points and come back out if he needs a plain van again. Neil’s got “stealth” in a bright orange van (make that make sense), and I’m sat here championing the minimal, one-person setup—everything has its place, and I can cram loads into a weekend. The big takeaway is simple: the van doesn’t create the adventure—you do. Whether it’s a £1k beater, a £30k stealth-ish camper, or a £100k dream machine, the best bit is getting away, resetting your head, and actually using the thing.
