This week’s Side Track Sunday was about as “Side Track Sunday” as it gets. John #2 was having technical issues (and honestly, I was having a few operator-to-keyboard issues myself), so I jumped in as the fill-in host with about ten minutes’ notice. Good thing I’ve got the new rig, because it wouldn’t be a Sunday without getting sidetracked right out of the gate. On the layout side, I talked through what I’ve been wrestling with on the south end of the dam scene and the inner-urban line. I’ve been painting the backdrop down that way, and while I was waiting for paint to dry I started messing with the pink foam incline Ken Amos dropped off to me. The goal is to get that incline/decline to bend around a tight 15-inch radius, and let’s just say: it bends… and then it pops. I tried cutting slots different depths, mimicking the factory flex points, and even considered stacking regular foam and cutting it into a curve—none of it was the magic answer yet. The takeaway: I’m not stuck, I’m just in the “try 500 ideas until one works” phase. Cutting the incline into shorter sections and angling the edges might be the direction I go next, and I’ve also got suggestions from the chat like gentle heat (hair dryer/heat gun) and alternate build methods.
