About This Video

Hey track gang—episode 30 for 2025 ended up being “something new” because a project literally fell into my lap. A neighbor (long story—family connection) dropped off a tub of trains and asked me to figure out what he’s got and whether it’ll run so he can set it up for his grandson. I’m no O-gauge expert, so I leaned on what I know, asked for help from the YouTube community, and started digging into three-rail O gauge (not even sure yet if it’s 027 or 072). In the tub were operating cars (milk car, circus car, auto loader), a street car, and the big surprise: a heavy Pennsylvania GG1 with missing pantographs—at least until I found the parts bag. I started the right way: bench first, then open things up and inspect/clean before applying power. The street car was filthy, so I cleaned the brushes and commutator and got it running (not quiet, but it runs). Then I tore into the “monster” GG1—dual motors, cleaned up, re-greased and oiled, bearings and rollers done, and I snapped the pantographs back on (they’re spring held, not screwed). I also showed how I’m cleaning rusty O-gauge track with a Scotch-Brite pad—no steel wool—while I figure out what to do about rusty pins and missing pins. The week got derailed by a computer upgrade at home, but I did at least get wood cut for my new control panel, and I reminded everyone about Side Track Sunday and the Fall GSMTS YouTube Meet & Greet RSVP.
