About This Video

Howdy track gang—this week in Boeville & Newtown Episode 3 for 2026 I’m talking about something that’s been on my mind for a while: YouTube and model railroading, and how our little niche fits into all the “YouTube guru” advice floating around out there. I’ve been on YouTube for 11 years and I’m still sitting in the 720-ish subscriber range, so I’m not coming at this like some big-time channel. I’m coming at it like a model railroader who’s been doing weekly updates and wants to help other folks in the hobby get their videos out there without overcomplicating it. I walk through the basics of what you actually need to record—phone, webcam, or a handy cam like I use—and why you don’t need to go drop thousands on cameras, boom mics, and fancy lights. I also touch on live streaming needs (decent lighting, a decent mic, headphones so you don’t echo all over YouTube), and I show the recording rig I use around the layout—an old heavy tripod on a wheeled base I built out of particle board. Then I get into my real workflow: editing in VideoPad, exporting to YouTube as unlisted, building a thumbnail with a quick snapshot, adding chapters, hashtags, and tags, pinning a comment, setting end screens, and finally scheduling the upload for my normal Friday 8:00 a.m. drop. The big takeaway: don’t expect your subs to magically skyrocket—but I am seeing better impressions and click-through by tightening up the process.
