About This Video

Hey track gang—this week in Episode 29-2025 I’m down at the Boeville & Newtown working through a “proof of concept” control panel update, and yeah… it turned into more than I thought it was going to be. I walk through the pre-work I was doing for Sidetrack Sunday: prepping terminal strips (knocking out lugs so I can screw them down), bending the pins 90° so they’ll sit flat in the panel box, tinning leads, and making jumper loops. The goal is to cleanly distribute power to my Atlas/Bachmann/LifeLike-style twin-coil switch machines (green/black/red), with the black side feeding a terminal strip that can serve all 13 switch machines. I also explain why I’m moving away from the big push-button approach—those take up room and you end up needing numbers you can’t always see. Instead, I’m using DPDT toggles so the center feed powers the turnout when I flip the switch (up for normal, down for divergent—except the one oddball turnout that’s oriented differently). Then I hit the snag: my existing rotary track selector wiring has too much strain because I didn’t plan for a movable panel. The good news is I dug through the stash and found two 12-position rotary switches I bought back in 2004, which solves the spacing problem for selecting tracks 1–5. Finally, I give an update on the Fall 2025 YouTube Meet & Greet weekend around the Great Scale Model Train Show, plus the Baltimore Street Car Museum meetup, and I ask folks to use the RSVP form so I can get an accurate headcount for food.
