About This Video

In this Sunday sewing livestream, I’m trying a method I’ve never done before: using receipt tape as a foundation to sew together rows/strips. I’d seen Karen Brown (Just Get It Done Quilts) use receipt tape for her crumb projects, and since I need a bunch of strip-y fabric for a new quilt idea, I figured…why not? So I pull out all the purple scraps folks have sent me (because pride flag order matters, and violet/purple is where I’m starting), and I start building improv “made fabric” right on the tape. While I’m sewing, I talk through the real-life stuff that happens when you test a new technique: remembering to drop stitch length (I go down to 1.5), swapping to my quarter-inch foot so I can keep myself honest, and dealing with the surprise of thermal receipt paper reacting to heat and even tearing on me. We troubleshoot in real time—overlapping tape, re-sewing the paper, and adjusting expectations—because improv quilting is basically permission to go rogue. All of this is in service of a bigger goal: a quilt show entry for the North Texas Quilt Festival theme “God Bless America,” but with my own pride-forward twist. This video is less “perfect pattern” and more “come hang out while I experiment,” with lots of practical takeaways if you want to try receipt tape piecing for your own modern quilting projects.
