In this video I break down my RED Komodo 6K rig build and why buying a RED camera feels like a real milestone in my filmmaking journey. I’ve wanted a RED since I was shooting on camcorders and then upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark II, and I still remember being blown away watching RED footage on big productions. I’ve worked with the Komodo-X before, but I found a perfectly used Komodo 6K deal that was honestly hard to pass up. For me, the main selling point is the image—RED claims 16 stops of dynamic range, and shooting RED RAW with 16-bit color gives you so much room to push and pull your grade. I walk through every piece of my setup: the Tilta full cage (I love the red accents and mounting points), the Komodo outrigger side handle (expensive new, but super comfortable), and the DJI Focus Pro for bringing “autofocus” vibes to cinema and even vintage lenses. I also talk about my SmallRig matte box + variable ND workaround since the Komodo doesn’t have built-in NDs (I’m spoiled from my Canon and FX6 world), plus the DZOFILM Vespid primes I’m building my cinema lens kit around. To finish it off, I cover power and monitoring—using a compact V-mount plate solution, and the Portkeys BM5 monitor for focus tools plus RED camera control—then tie everything together with a Kondor Blue baseplate and 15mm rods.
