In this video I’m breaking down my full Blackmagic Pyxis 12K rig and why I built it the way I did for fashion films, commercial shoots, and on-the-go projects where I still want a cinematic image in a portable setup. I also share my first impressions of the Pyxis 12K coming from someone who’s shot a bunch of Blackmagic cameras—my original Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K was literally my secret weapon back in the day, and it’s wild to see how far Blackmagic has come. For this test, I put the Pyxis into a sporty fashion environment—real sunlight, motion, texture, and color—and shot everything in 8K Blackmagic RAW. One of the biggest wins is being able to shoot 12K, 8K, or 4K without cropping into the sensor, so your field of view and depth of field stay consistent (if you’ve owned RED, you know why that matters). I walk through the core pieces: the Tilta cage foundation, my SmallRig NATO top handle swap, the Tilta V-mount plate + SmallRig 155Wh batteries, the MOFAGE Poco PL-to-L ND adapter (because no internal NDs is a shame), DJI Focus Pro for solo work, the Pyxis monitor, DJI SDR wireless video, and the baseplate/rod setup. My takeaway: the image is honestly one of the most beautiful I’ve seen in a long time—basically Alexa Mini vibes for $6K—just know it’s not a low-light monster and the BRAW/Resolve workflow has a learning curve (I’m still a noob).
