In this video, I share why I switched to medium format film and how it completely shifted the way I approach photography. After feeling burned out shooting thousands of digital images, picking up the Mamiya RB67 and 645AFD helped me slow down, become more intentional, and fall back in love with the process. From loading 120 film to scanning at home, this is my honest look at rediscovering creativity through film. -- SPONSOR LA Love Creative. For sponsorship opportunities. About This Video

Creativity comes in waves, and lately I’ve been in one of those heavy seasons—full-time work, client shoots, and trying to show up as a husband and dad. Shooting thousands of digital frames with endless editing options was burning me out, so I decided to slow down and reconnect with the process (not perfectionism). That’s what pushed me into medium format film, and honestly, it changed how I see photography. In this video I break down my switch to the Mamiya RB67 and the Mamiya 645 AFD, and I take both cameras into a real fashion shoot with Val. The RB67 is a mechanical beast—slow, intentional, and made for studio work—plus the 6x7 negatives only give me about 10 frames per roll, so I have to think before I press the shutter. The 645 AFD gives me the speed and functionality (autofocus, aperture priority, auto exposure) when I need to move fast, like shooting fashion or trying to keep up with my son. I also share the growing pains: misloading 120 film (and losing a whole roll), second-guessing exposures, and learning my home scanning workflow with my Canon R5C and a 100mm macro lens, plus dialing in Negative Lab Pro. Film isn’t magic, but it brought the excitement back—tones, grain, and those color shifts when you over/underexpose reminded me why I fell in love with photography in the first place.
