In this video I put the iPhone 15 Pro Max head-to-head with an actual photography camera—my Canon R6—using visuals from a real fashion shoot out in an urban LA environment. I’ve done iPhone vs mirrorless comparisons on this channel before (back in the iPhone 10/11 days), but the 15 Pro Max is honestly on another level. I shot 48MP RAW photos on the iPhone and compared them to my R6 images (Sigma 24-70 f/2.8, shot wide open at f/2.8), and after I edited and corrected everything in post, it was surprisingly hard to tell which was which in a lot of cases. The biggest giveaways are still the things you’d expect: sensor size and lens selection. On the R6, that shallow depth of field and real bokeh is just different, and the iPhone tends to keep more of the background in focus. I also noticed the iPhone skewing a little more magenta and a little cooler/bluer even when you match white balance, so it’s something to watch for. From a filmmaking standpoint, Apple Log is the big story. I shot a lot of clips using the Blackmagic app in 4K 60p ProRes LT, and I’m blown away by how beautiful that image is coming out of such a small device. My main takeaway: if you let Apple “do its thing,” it can look like a phone—but when you shoot RAW and Apple Log, you unlock the real potential. It won’t replace your Canon, but it’s a serious tool, especially for beginners and for extra angles/BTS.
