In this video I break down how I shot a full fashion editorial, and what I think actually makes an editorial feel like it belongs in a magazine. For me, it’s the connective tissue: a clear creative vision, a consistent theme across the images, and honestly… a little level of weirdness. My concept was a “boxing femme fatale” story—glamorous wardrobe in a grungy warehouse environment—so every look had to feel like a new chapter in the same world. I walk you through each setup and the exact lighting choices I made, even while shooting it basically solo (both my assistants had last-minute emergencies, so you’ll see me struggling in the BTS). I used the amaran 300C as my main key with a large softbox (sometimes with a grid for control), a Forza 500 as a punchy backlight “spotlight,” and amaran PT4c tubes for cooler fill/top light so I could play warm vs cool color temps instead of living at 5600K forever. I also talk about using props to tell story fast—like a briefcase of cash and a handcuffed briefcase—because it gives the model something to do and makes the narrative obvious without doing too much. My biggest takeaway: even if it’s not getting published, build your shoot like a magazine story and make sure every look actually fits the theme.
