In this video I’m breaking down two high key photography lighting looks that I think are super important for your portfolio—especially if you want to book clients down the line. When I say “high key,” I’m talking very bright images with boosted highlights, usually tied to e-commerce, white backdrops, and clean, punchy lighting that agencies and brands love. You’re going to run into this look in fashion, product work, even interview lighting, so I want you to understand the technique without overcomplicating it. For the first setup, I’m in my studio (Sage Studios in the Arts District of downtown LA) shooting on a white backdrop with a posing cube. I used four continuous lights because I was shooting video at the same time: I blasted the background from both sides, then used a big soft key (the Godox FS 400B light mat) from above/side to shape the talent. The biggest takeaway: get your model away from the wall to control spill—unless you actually want that washed-out high key vibe. Then I finish it off with a V-flat for negative fill so the image isn’t super flat and still has shape. The second look is my “one light” high key setup—perfect if you’re strapped for cash. I used the same FS 400B at about 45 degrees on a white curtain (and also tested it on our white living room set), giving a soft but slightly moody, editorial shadow feel that still reads bright and high fashion.
