How to make handmade watercolor for yourself -quick & easy- from pastels, pencils, charcoal, mica pigment powders / dry media! Featuring Arteza art supplies and 100% cotton watercolor paper. - show more for supply list- Get creative and try what you have on hand, but remember that really waxy color pencils are less suitable for grinding into powder on a nail file/sandpaper than charcoal, chalk pastels, graphite or watercolor pencils. Mica and other pigments in powder form are ideal for making larger quantities of paint, but a tiny shaving from a pencil may be all you need for a single painting session! I was not paid for this review. All product opinions and usage ideas are my own. Happy painting :) Arteza often has great sale prices and affordable shipping options on their site. About This Video

In this video I’m showing you an easy, quick DIY way to make watercolor paint from dry media you already have—things like charcoal, pencils, soft pastels, and especially mica pigment powders. The basic idea is simple: create a little pile of powder (by shaving/grinding your dry medium), then mix it with a watercolor binder so it behaves more like real paint. I also demo everything on 100% cotton watercolor paper so you can see how it actually moves, stains, and layers. Along the way I share what works best (and what doesn’t). Really waxy colored pencils are just harder to grind and don’t give you much usable powder, but charcoal, chalk pastels, graphite, and watercolor pencils are much more cooperative. Mica powders are the easiest way to make larger quantities fast, and they’re super fun for sparkly effects. I also talk about binder options like gum arabic (or a ready-to-use watercolor binder), and a simple tip for storage: if a color is hard to re-wet later, adding a tiny drop of vegetable glycerin can help. And yes—this is a creative experiment, not a paid review; I’m just sharing what I’m testing and what I’d actually use.
