I’ve been a fan of Abbey Yung since before she made Sephora Squad, and I’ve always appreciated how scientific she is about hair. But when everybody started talking about the “Abbey Yung method,” I felt like there was a void for kinky/coily textured hair girlies—so in this video I break down how I’d adapt those steps for my type 4 hair. And yes: this is very a la carte. Take what you need and throw away the rest. If everything doesn’t work for you… boooo… you don’t have to use it. I walk through my go-to pre-poos (Pattern Breakage Barrier Mask for that moisture boost, Bounce Back when I’m going straight-to-curly, and Detangling Nectar when I’m coming out of a wash and go or braid out). Then we get into oils I’ll actually use before shampoo (Bread Hair Gloss for slip/detangling, and Adwoa Baomint Shine Oil as a hot oil treatment). I also talk clarifying vs exfoliating shampoos, how often I clarify (usually once a month, more if I’m going into a silk press), and why I’m not clarifying every single wash day. From there, I share how I handle bond repair (K18 monthly or 4 consecutive wash days when I color) and other bond-repair options like full systems/lines, plus why conditioning and deep conditioning (with heat/steam sometimes) still matter for us. The goal is healthy hair—whether you wear it curly, straight, or you’re doing a little bleach and living your life in between.
