There have been plenty of times on this channel where I’ve done something impractical, goofy, or just outright dumb… but surprisingly, this Asustor NAS project isn’t one of those times. In this video I take a look at the Asustor Lockerstor 6 Gen 3, mostly because I wanted to do the “goofy” TrueNAS install you saw up front, but also because I like keeping tabs on what’s happening in the NAS market—especially with the new ADM 5 software. Asustor sent the unit over, but like always, they don’t get editorial control and they don’t see the video before you do. I walk through the hardware (Ryzen Embedded V3C14, 16GB DDR5 ECC with an easy upgrade path, quad NVMe slots, 5GbE + dual 10GbE) and my experience with ADM 5 for the “normal NAS” stuff: shares, snapshots, backups, and the surprisingly handy one-touch backup workflow. I also talk about what I didn’t love—features spread across too many apps, no built-in VM manager, and Docker being a bit of a mixed bag (Portainer worked… eventually). Then I do the funny part: installing TrueNAS on a box that has no video output and NICs that aren’t supported out of the box. It’s janky (yes, there’s painter’s tape), but it works—and I share the real takeaway: don’t buy this just to run TrueNAS, but it’s nice knowing the hardware won’t become a paperweight later.
