About This Video

A couple years ago I bought a Framework 13 that was, frankly, overpriced for the specs. But I still walked away extremely happy because Framework’s whole thing is repairable, upgradeable, reusable hardware—and that promise is exactly why I bought it. In this video I show what that looks like in the real world: I swapped my old 13th gen Intel board and the original display for an AMD Ryzen 5 7640U mainboard and the 2.8K 120Hz matte display, and the whole “upgrade” felt like getting a brand new laptop without buying a whole new laptop. Then I take the fun part—the old mainboard—and repurpose it like a proper homelab tinkerer. I 3D print a case, flip on the standalone operation setting, add a CMOS battery so the clock behaves, and install Proxmox to see what kind of idle power draw I can get (around 6–8W after tuning). From there I test it as a tiny server with Jellyfin and Home Assistant, poke at the I/O reality of “USB for everything,” and get a little hacky with PCIe via the M.2 E-key slot—plus I confirm 5Gb networking over a USB adapter. My takeaway: yeah, you pay a premium, but the ability to upgrade fast and turn the leftovers into real projects is genuinely worth talking about.
