Tiny/Mini/Micro PCs are insanely popular for homelabs, and I wanted to see if a newer used option is actually worth paying more for. In this video I put the HP ProDesk 600 G6 Mini (and a weirdly similar “mystery” system: the HP Engage Flex Mini) through some quick benchmarks, power testing, and—more importantly—tinkering. Performance-wise, it’s not some mind-blowing 2x leap over older classics like an EliteDesk G3, but you do get better efficiency and a lot more flexibility if you care about I/O and expandability. The real reason I like these G6 minis is the platform: dual NVMe slots, an M.2 E-key slot you can repurpose, and HP’s Flex IO v2 ecosystem. I swapped in a 2.5Gb (and talked about 10Gb) Flex IO NICs, added another 2.5Gb NIC via the E-key slot with a 3D-printed bracket, and even explored storage options like sneaking in extra NVMe or adding a 2.5" SATA drive using the internal header. I also messed with Intel AMT remote management (MeshCommander), and confirmed that EliteDesk models can do KVM while the ProDesk can’t. Bottom line: if you want a “perfect” mini home server you can get a bit hacky with, these are awesome—if the price is right.
