About This Video

In this video I do a little thought experiment: if I could wipe my homelab clean and start over today (and yeah… we’ll pretend my Oklahoma house got taken out by a tornado), what would I actually build with what I know now? I’m also assuming I’m not doing YouTube anymore, because content creation changes everything—especially storage. So instead of “how much gear can I cram into a rack,” this is more about what’s ideal, affordable, and realistic for me. I break a “good homelab” down into three things: functionality (does it do what you need?), reliability (is it up when you need it?), and cost (hardware, software, and power). Then I walk through the four big building blocks: compute, storage, networking, and where it all lives. I’d start with a simple NAS built from a repurposed desktop (think Optiplex-style), toss in a couple of used HDDs, and run something like Unraid so it can handle storage plus basics like Jellyfin and Home Assistant. From there I’d add a UPS, keep networking simple (probably 2.5Gb instead of 10Gb), and only add extra mini PCs for tinkering so I’m not breaking movie night when I get curious.
