About This Video

10-inch racks are awesome for home labs. They’re compact, easy to place anywhere, and they’re basically the perfect size for consumer switches, routers, mini PCs, and all the weird little homelab bits I end up collecting. In this video I took that idea one step further: instead of just 3D printing mounts and adapters for a rack, I decided to 3D print the entire rack. I had an upcoming project in mind (initially 4U), couldn’t decide which design made the most sense, so I printed and built three different options to see what actually works. I tested the Mod 10 (Mandic Really), Lab Rax (Michael Klements), and the “Galaxy” rack design (MRPtech). I go through print time and filament usage, the hardware each design needs (cage nuts vs heat-set inserts vs rack studs), and what it’s like to actually mount gear and manage cables inside them. My big takeaways: Mod 10 is the easiest to print/assemble and the most rigid, Lab Rax looks incredible (and has extra depth), and the Galaxy is the easiest to work inside and the most expandable/modular. In the end I landed on the Mod 10—my project morphed into needing 6U, and expanding it was dead simple, plus it’s sturdy and portable for something I’ll be moving around.
