With everyone hyped for the Steam Controller 2, I had to talk about the controller that’s out here wearing the “Steam” name like it earned it: the Hori Wireless “Steam Controller.” In this review I go piece by piece—unboxing, comfort, build quality, D-pad, face buttons, sticks, gyro, bumpers/triggers, rear buttons, the Hori Device Manager software, battery life, and even polling/input behavior. And yeah… this is the worst controller I’ve graced with my gamer mitts, which is saying something because I’ve tested a lot of trash and quitters over the years. The big problem is the identity crisis: it’s D-input with a Bluetooth dongle (in 2025), it brags about gyro but it’s stuttery and inconsistent, and it doesn’t even have trackpads—despite being branded like it’s part of the Steam Controller legacy. The triggers are always digital buttons (no real analog), there’s no vibration, no headset jack, and converter/adapter support was a no-go in my testing. My takeaway is simple: if you want “Steam Controller” features, wait for the real stuff—because this Hori pad is a plastic princess that doesn’t deserve the family name.
