Sony (PlayStation’s mother ship) filed a patent in Feb 2023 that just went public, and the internet is acting like it’s the PS6 controller. In this video I break down what the patent actually shows: a controller concept with dual touch surfaces where buttons can be resized, removed, and dragged around—so you can go offset sticks, symmetrical sticks, shrink the face buttons for a game that only needs two, or move a D-pad wherever you want. It even mentions heat/presence sensing, which could mean the controller knows when your thumb is hovering before you actually “press.” But as someone who reviews controllers for a living (and yes, I clock in), I also lay out the big issues. Competitive players live and die by physical feedback—thumbsticks and mechanical face buttons tell your brain exactly what’s happening without you looking down. A touchscreen layout has a learning curve, won’t feel as responsive, and it’s coming at a time when sticks are getting better than ever (Hall effect, TMRS) and buttons are getting more tactile. On top of that, battery life is already rough on DualSense, so adding more sensors/screens screams even more drain and cost. My take: cool patent, but if it ever ships, it’s likely an optional controller—not the default PS6 pad, and I hope to God it isn’t.
