About This Video

What does it really take to shoot one of those big, bright, “perfect crunch” chip commercials? In this video, I tried to find out by taking on a $0 challenge: I shot a homemade Lays-style commercial right in my living room using only the gear I already had. The plan sounded simple—happy vibe, quick cuts, a hero slow-motion chip fall—but things went wrong immediately. My first setup looked less like a high-key commercial and more like a crime scene, and I was honestly this close to quitting. The turning point was my first “aha moment”: it’s not about owning expensive lights—it’s about shaping the light you have. I switched to an overhead-style setup, mixed my one key light with small portable LEDs, and suddenly everything got softer and more spread out (even if the rig was held together by pure hope and a chip clip). Then came the real battle: getting the slow-motion hero shots to actually work—focus misses, messy takes, and a whole graveyard of failed chips. I even hacked a “probe lens” style shot using a friction arm and an iPhone. Once the footage was in, I leaned into music, sound design (because the crunch matters), and my favorite part—color grading—pushing saturation so the yellow bag and golden chips pop. It’s not perfect, but I’m genuinely proud of it, and it proves you don’t need a Hollywood budget—creativity and problem-solving are the real gear.
