About This Video

In this DaVinci Resolve tutorial, I show you how to create a Thanos snap / disintegration effect using Fusion—step by step, from scratch. Before we even start, I warn you: this one is a bit heavy on your computer, so close everything else and keep only Resolve open. You’ll need two clips: your acting shot (with you in frame) and a clean plate of the background. I stack them, turn them into a Fusion Clip, and then we isolate the subject—either with Magic Mask (paid) or, if you’re on the free version like many of you, with a simple Polygon mask. Once the subject is separated, the fun part is building the particle system: PEmitter + PRender (and I make sure PRender is set to 2D, not the default 3D). I crank particles carefully (start low like 2,000 and only increase later), switch the emitter region to Bitmap so it emits from the subject, then add PDirectional Force for that 45° push and PTurbulence to break the “straight line” look. After that, I animate the snap using a Polygon + instanced Polygon trick with border width/soft edge, convert the mask into an image with Bitmap, and control it via Matte Control (Garbage Matte + Invert). Finally, I composite everything back over the clean plate so the subject truly disappears into dust.
