About This Video

So let’s dive into DaVinci Resolve and build a simple documentary-style edit using Fusion—exactly the way I do it when I’m trying to make a sequence feel more tactile and “real” with paper textures, drawings, and layered assets. I start from the Edit page by dragging a Fusion Composition onto the timeline, then inside Fusion I set up a clean node flow: Background node first, then I layer each asset from left to right using Merge nodes. For every element (wood texture, drawing, book, car, key, newspaper), I’m basically repeating the same steps: import, Transform for size/rotation/placement, and Drop Shadow to sell the depth (I keep the shadows consistent because I’m assuming the light direction). After that, I show how I create a text-in-a-box label (with a rounded rectangle, an outline, and a typewriter-style font), and then animate the text using a Follower modifier so it scales on smoothly with proper easing and motion blur. The only “challenging” part is the magnifying glass: I use an Ellipse to mask a zoomed Transform, link pivots/centers with expressions so everything follows the same path, and add a Dent node for distortion to mimic the lens. Finally, I make it more cinematic on the Edit page with an Adjustment Layer (Zoom Blur + Vignette), and I animate position/zoom to follow the magnifying glass movement.
