About This Video

In this video I show you how I create an amazing flash transition in DaVinci Resolve using a simple Fusion setup. The key idea is that you need two clips: a clean plate (no subject in the frame—like my desk shot) and a second clip with the subject. I stack them, align them properly, then convert the top clip into a new Fusion Clip so I can isolate the subject and push the brightness for that “flash pop” moment. Inside Fusion, I mask the subject using a Polygon node (and if you’ve got the paid version you can use Magic Mask, but I keep it doable for the free version too). After inverting the mask correctly so only the subject is selected, I add a Brightness/Contrast node and drive the brightness up—mine goes all the way to 1 for a strong hit. Back on the Edit page, I keep the bright flash look for just two frames, cut it, then disable the mask/brightness on the next section so the shot returns to normal. Add a punchy sound effect and the transition instantly feels more real and “sold.”
