About This Video

Happy new year guys—this one is all about my Sony a6600 cinematic settings, because I kept getting comments asking what I’m using. These are not the default settings. I’ve tweaked my PP7 (S-Log2) setup to get a more cinematic starting point in-camera, and I walk you through exactly what I changed: black level +2, S-Log2 gamma, black gamma set to middle with level -4, knee on auto, and color mode on S-Gamut3.Cine. I also drop my detail/sharpness down to -6 because digital sharpening looks bad, and I’d rather add sharpness later in editing if I need it. Then I go through the main video menu settings—shooting 4K by default, 24fps for that film look, and switching to HD when I want 60/120fps. I also show my autofocus preferences (fast + responsive), audio recording setup (I keep my mic levels so it doesn’t peak above -12dB), steadyshot on auto, grid lines for composition, and most importantly my zebra setup at 100 for S-Log exposure. Finally, I explain my S-Log2 exposure workflow: keep ISO at the minimum (500), keep shutter at double the frame rate (1/50 for 24fps), and control brightness mainly with aperture—only pushing ISO up to around 1250 if I really have to to avoid noise.
