In this video I break down five real reasons I keep reaching for the Canon RF 70–200mm f/4L IS USM for video on my Canon R8 and Canon C70. This isn’t a spec-sheet review—I’m talking about how it actually feels on real shoots, especially when I’m traveling and trying to keep my kit small. The first big thing is the size and weight. This lens is ridiculously compact (roughly “sandwich-sized”), and compared to my old EF 70–200 2.8 it’s about half the size and around a third of the weight. That alone makes me way more likely to actually bring a telephoto with me. From there, I cover autofocus, compression, reach, and stabilization. The RF L-series autofocus has been awesome for the way I shoot—run-and-gun, solo, and often in changing conditions. Even in low light it only hunted a bit in really dark scenes. I also explain why you can still get great separation at f/4 by leaning into compression at longer focal lengths (and why I’m fine sacrificing a little blur to carry one less lens). On crop bodies like my C70, the reach gets wild—70 becomes about 112 and 200 goes up to about 320—so it feels like two lenses in one. Finally, the IS modes are a legit lifesaver for handheld shots, especially on my R8 with no IBIS.
