Aloha gang—this one’s Reggae Tuesday and we’re using Scaler 2 to build a reggae banger around a sample. I start with a horn sample that already tells me the two big things: it’s 140 BPM and it’s in G minor. From there I match my Ableton tempo to 140, pull up Scaler 2, and use it like a cheat code for finding chords that actually fit the sample instead of guessing all day. I jump into a preset song set (Hip Hop 1) just because it’s already a minor vibe, then I simply bump the key up one half-step (F# minor to G minor) with the arrows. After that, I bind the chords to my MIDI controller so I can audition progressions fast, and I tweak the voicings using Voice Grouping to push everything up an octave so it’s not all muddy. One chord felt weird, so I use the G minor scale inside Scaler to hunt down the missing link (C minor) and lock in my custom progression. Then I lay the chords down, quantize, and use MIDI Capture to drag the full chord MIDI into Ableton so I can swap instruments and layer sounds (piano/organ) reggae-style. I tighten timing, extend the loop, add bass in G minor, and we’re basically there—few cleanups, but it’s pretty damn close. Much love, much aloha—see you on the next one.
