What’s up everybody—welcome back to Reggae Sunday. In this one I’m inside Ableton (little baby Able Town), and I show you how I build a reggae-style idea starting with Scaler 2, then piping that MIDI into a totally different instrument sound so it feels like a real track fast. I keep it super practical: grab a progression (I start with a pop progression), hit Bind, and now Scaler is driving chords on whatever sound you want—in my case a kalimba/plastic mallet vibe because it’s got that island d’vibe. Then I switch Scaler into Perform mode and choose Melody, and this is the sauce: I like pulling presets from Motif and Riff because they instantly spit out musical patterns you can flip with the buttons on the left. I record that, quantize it, MIDI capture so I’ve got the notes separated, and then I add groove/swing (because you already know). From there it’s just building: bubble chords on the 2 and 4, tightening up weird notes, swapping a too-crazy hi-hat, and arranging so I don’t loop myself to death. We end up with a lo-fi reggae banger idea—intro, seasoning hits (“Sultan Peppa”), a dubby section, and even a sticky guitar part to glue it together. Much love, much peace, and much aloha.
