I open up Scaler 2 (I’m on the newer 2.4 vibes) and use the “Common Progressions” section to get a progression going fast, then I shape it into something that actually feels like reggae. Somebody in the comments had me thinking about major vs minor, so I leaned into a more dramatic, not-just-happy feel and kept it moving. From there I do what I always do: record the chord stabs, quantize, and get the groove right so the rhythm lands on the 2 and 4. I stack layers (building it, stacking it, making it sound thick), duplicate parts, pull out low notes when needed, and start arranging around the pocket. Then it’s time for guitar — I dial in latency, clean up CPU-heavy stuff when Ableton starts acting up, and lay down simple, effective skanks that glue the whole thing together. To finish, I hunt for a top-line with some “ear candy,” tweak the vibe (a little old-timey / mid-century modern energy), and land on a melody that surprised me in the best way.
