I start super simple at around 140 BPM with just a hi-hat to keep time, then I flip the script by grabbing chords from Scaler’s “techno” presets and making them reggae just by playing them on the upbeat. The core progression is Bm7 → Em7 → F#m7, and I show how I record it, loop it, then use MIDI Capture to pull the full chord notes into a clip (then I slide it off the “one” so it hits on the 2 and 4 for proper skanks). From there it’s straight cooking: I layer guitar skanks (yes, live and yes, sometimes you gotta unplug and plug it back in), build a “sticky guitar” part that follows the bass idea, and drop in a sub bass once the groove is locked. I also talk through little Ableton moves that make a big difference—quantize, nudging off-grid (Command+4), pitching parts down for the bubble/organ vibe, and keeping things under control with a limiter on the master. To glue the arrangement together, I add real drum fills (Addictive Drums), vintage up a sample by rolling off highs, then dub it out with H-Delay on a return. We finish by arranging intro/verse/chorus, adding risers and a tambourine for momentum—because those little transitions are everything.
