About This Video

Aloha gang— in this video I break down one of my favorite new features in Scaler 2: Melody Mode. This is part of the Scaler 2.3 update, so if you don’t see it on your end, you just need to update (it’s free). I show you exactly where Melody Mode lives (up top where the performance features usually are), and why it’s such a cheat code for pulling fresh melodic ideas out of a chord progression. Melody Mode is split into four categories: Colors, Motifs, Riffs, and Themes. Themes leans cinematic and soundscape-y, Colors is more of a subtle enhancement, and Motifs/Riffs is where I spend most of the time—because that’s where you get those rock/trap/pop style melodic movements that just spark ideas fast. I load up a chord progression (I use a bossa nova-style one) and demonstrate how you can switch between different “expressions” live using the green keys—so the melody evolves while you’re playing. Then I take it a step further and show how to automate the whole thing even if you don’t have a MIDI controller. I drop the chords into the Pattern section, adjust the timing/length in Edit, and use Playback Performances to assign different Melody Mode motifs per chord. End result: endless variations right at your fingertips—bangers only. Aloha always.
