About This Video

In this video I’m reviewing the Ortur R2 desktop laser, a fully enclosed Class 1 machine that really surprised me with how much they’ve packed into a compact footprint. I unbox it, show you exactly what comes in the box (materials to test with, crib sheets, air assist parts, extraction hose, tools, camera, etc.), then walk through setup—keys, emergency stop, SD card (it won’t run without it), USB-C connections for the PC and the built-in HD camera, plus the extraction port. I also go over the safety features I actually care about: lid-open stop, flame detection, tilt detection, key lock and emergency stop. From there I get into real-world projects using both the 10W diode head and the optional 1.3W IR head. I engrave coasters, slate, a business card in LightBurn with camera alignment, and I do an engrave-and-cut swan on birch ply (400 speed, 100% power, one pass) using the supplied cutting bars. Then I swap to the IR head to tackle jobs a diode struggles with—reflective dog tags, stainless/silver style tags, black acrylic, and even a photo-style engrave on a heart necklace as a gift. The big takeaway: the quick-swap heads and the enclosed design make the R2 a proper multi-purpose tool, but I did hit a firmware issue where jobs paused mid-run—rolling back firmware fixed it for me.
