About This Video

In this video I’m taking you with me for a week on my ophthalmology rotation as a fourth-year vet student at OVC, and I’m not gonna lie—going into opto I was definitely nervous. I show you what the flow of the service actually looks like (holiday Monday prep, consult-heavy days, and the constant pressure of keeping up). A huge part of this rotation for me was the responsibility that comes with it—especially writing discharge summaries that go home with the client and get sent to the family vet. I had to hand them in, get corrections, and then turn them around fast, which sounds simple… until you get a rare case and you’re suddenly doing two hours of research trying to piece everything together. I also talk a lot about the mental load of rotations and why I’m such a big advocate for taking care of your mental health in vet school. My schedule changes constantly in fourth year, so finding time for therapy can be hard, and that’s why I share BetterHelp as an option that fits into a busy student life. By the end of the vlog, I do an opto recap: it’s challenging, it’s time-consuming, it has a reputation for a reason—but I learned a ton, I had an amazing team, and honestly… I think I kind of like eyes now.
