Trigger warning: this video talks about euthanasia and end of life care. If this video feels too emotionally taxing to watch, I will see you in the next one 🤍 As a new grad vet, I had no idea what to expect when I did my first euthanasia. I also had no idea it would be as emotionally daunting as it was. My hope for this video is it gives you a better idea of what to expect when you are faced with your first euthanasia as a new grad vet. Or if you're a seasoned vet, I hope you know that you are not alone when it comes to compassion fatigue and burnout. As always, if you have any questions about vet school, application process or new grad life, don't hesitate to reach out! About This Video

Trigger warning: this video is all about euthanasia and end of life care. I made it because as a new grad vet, I truly felt unprepared for my first euthanasia—not on the “drug doses” side, but on the emotional side and the real-life flow of the appointment. I’m walking you through what to expect, how I prepare (mindset + medicine), and what I actually say to clients so you can feel more grounded whether it’s your first euthanasia or your hundredth. I start with the mindset shift that helped me the most: euthanasia isn’t failure, and it’s not “giving up.” It’s a medical procedure that prevents suffering, and guiding families through it is a really powerful part of our job. Then I get practical—knowing your clinic’s protocol, doing drug calculations ahead of time, sedation plans, catheter placement choices (front leg vs back leg), and small environment details (calming music, cozy room, candle) that make a hard day feel a little gentler. Finally, I talk about the conversation, the procedure step-by-step (including sedation expectations and staying calm if things don’t look exactly how you pictured), and how to support yourself afterward. I cried for three hours after my first euthanasia, so if you’re feeling wrecked, you’re not alone—compassion fatigue is real, but so is compassion satisfaction. You can grow into this skill with time and a supportive team.
